Winger or "Uncle Jake" as many people called him, was for many years a valued and faithful correspondent of this newspaper and his weekly contributions were widely read not only by those who were acquainted in his beloved Lamotte Prairie but by those who could rest a little from their own busy life by reading his kindly chronicling of the 'comings' and goings' of people who were not in to great a hurry to visit of evenings or Sunday afternoon and who would take time out to stroll through the well kept cemetery to read the stones and recall the familiar ones who were of the past. For the benefit of those who have been reading his items and will miss them a few have been picked at random from those of a year ago and are reproduced below; " W. J. Fitzpatrick called on Ye Scribe Saturday p.m. and talked about old times as far back as 1881." That's back a far piece. "It's spring. Some of our up to date farmers were plowing for corn last week." " For our neighbors in Florida who are basking among the sunshine and enjoying the flowers, we had our first snow a week ago and this is December 2. Today the snow is gone and it looks lie we might have a green Christmas." "Monday a.m. and the fifth morning in succession that it has been dark and gloomy. Also icy and foggy which makes driving dangerous and therefore we can stay home and look after things that should be done. "Here it is January 6 and how many of you made new resolutions and how many have broken them?" " The Junior Choir of the Oak Grove church under leadership of Wilma Mehler, sang several Easter hymns Sunday morning. They were dressed in white capes and red ties and looked like pretty flowers to Ye Scribe." "There was no thunder in February but just the same reports are coming in that wheat looks fine although is was shut in by the cold for along time. It was hard on the ground hogs, too, to be shut up so long." " This Monday morning the air is full of tractor music, plowing and getting the ground underway. Birds are twittering, too, and crows are flying but the buzz of the farm machinery is what makes a farmer's heart light in the spring." " One of our nicest surprises in months came Tuesday evening at early lamp light when Paul B. Harper and Mrs. Agnes Smith call on Ye Scribe. They were more welcome that flowers in May. "It's a comforting thing to see family members stroll through our pretty cemetery, reading the stones and bring to mind again the young and old who lie there. Memories are among the beautiful things given to man." ***************************************************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
