Obituary of Noah Evans, Crawford County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Cindy McCachern Obituary of Noah Evans 28 Feb 1902, Hutsonville (IL) Herald Death of Noah Evans Was One of the Oldest Residents in the County--Noah Evans Dead Another aged and respected citizen of this community was called to his reward last Sunday in the death of Noah Evans. Mr. Evans had been ill for several months, the cause of his demise being lung trouble. The deceased was born April 10th, 1828, near York and was aged 73 years, 10 months and 13 days. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Evans, who moved to this state from North Carolina nearly a century ago. In youth Noah Evans operated a tramp wheel mill owned by his father and located near their home. The mill was one of the first in this section and was adapted exclusively to grinding corn. In those days farmers residing twenty miles away would bring their grain to this mill. often remaining a week to await their turn. Mr. Evans was married in 1847 to Miss Martha Bell, two children being born to them, one son, Clint, surviving. A few years after the death of his wife, which occurred in 1854, Mr. Evans was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Jeffers, who died about one year ago. To this union were born six children, but only two sons are now living. They are Rev. Orrin Evans of Morrison, Ill., and Bert Evans of this place. Mr. Evans has resided in or near Hutsonville for the past forty-six years, following the occupation of farming and operating the ferry. He is survived by one brother, Nixon Evans, residing near West York, and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Hamilton of Hutsonville, Mrs. Helen Gaver of Oblong, Mrs. Rebecca Bishop of Kankakee and Mrs. Sarah Johnson, residing in Minnesota. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Wednesday, being conducted by Rev. Arthur Roberts of Windsor, pastor of the Universalist church northwest of town, of which Mr. Evans has been a member for the last thirty years. The funeral was held under the auspices of the local Masonic lodge, with which order Mr. Evans had been identified for thirty-nine years.
