At his home in Hutsonville Township, at 12:30 AM on Sunday, occurred the death of Simpson Rains. In company of his son Edward, Mr. Rains had visited during the holidays with relatives in Union County, and while en route home on Tuesday of last week was taken in with pneumonia. Being quite feeble and aged his system could not withstand the ravages of the disease and life took it's departure at the time above noted. Simpson Rains was born in Crawford County Sptember 6, 1929, being aged 73 years, 3 months and and 28 days. He was the eldest of a family of eleven children, all of whom preceded our subject in death. His father, Ambrose B. Rains was born in Wayne Cunty, North Carolina and emigrated to Illinois in a very early day, settling in Union County and removing to Crawford County in 1827, settling on the farm which has since been the home of Simpson Rains. Simpson was raised on the farm and educated from the subscription schools common in his day. When he was 24 years of age he left home and bought 60 acres of land. Though compelled to go in debt for it and pay ten per cent interest on the principal, he managed to struggle through and prosper.In 1864 he sold his farm and removed to the old homestead, buying 302 acres of the other heirs. He continued to add to this until his farm contained 432 acres. In 1853 he married Miss Mary Jane Lindley, who with the following children still survives: Edward, Morton, George, Mrs. Chas. Gurley, Mrs. Franklin Guyer, Mrs. Ed Holmes, Mrs. Ed Dry, Mrs. Allen Newlin and Miss Nannie Rains. Politically Mr. Rains was an ardent Republican and was several times honored with office. He was highly respected and enjoyed a wide circle of friends. He was a member of the Universalist Church.
