It is south on Route 121 out of Mattoon then south on Montrose road about 2 miles then west at the second road about one mile, there is Brush Creek. The Brush Creek Church of Christ was started at this location about 1894. The church is nothing more than a memory. Chester Brown, was Secretary/Trustee of the cemetery from 1937 until he retired in 1992 or 1993, he wasn't sure, but he is 90 years old! His information from the Plat diagram of the cemetery and the Record book from 1921 through April 1958 have been very helpful. Donations of One dollar and some donations of Fifty cents were recorded. You could buy a Grave Site for Three Dollars and pay for it in installments. At the May 4, 1952 meeting it was voted to raise the price of the lots from Three to Ten Dollars. They seldom had a large balance in the treasury. Written records for burials were not kept, unless there is a tombstone there is no record. The cemetery now has a younger Trustee, Dennis Brown. He is down the road from the cemetery and he seems to be doing a good job. Some of the Grave Markers are weathered and cannot be read while others have sunk into the ground, some are broken, some are just gone or over the hill to the south and yet some graves never had a marker. I thought it worth mentioning that several of the residents of Brush Creek Cemetery came into this world as far back as 1770 & the very early 1800's. There are probably older ones but if there are, they have no markers or they are unreadable. Some of the earliest names are......... Edward Brown born in 1811 and died 1889..... Nancy Tays McElhiney was born 1800 in Ireland, the wife of John McElhiney who also was born in Ireland in 1798, Hester Boyd was born 1810, Martha Pearson 1814 and John Rhodes 1814. Another early pioneer was G. Smith, his full name was Silas Green Smith, born January 2, 1801 in Virginia; fought in the Black Hawk War; Silas Green Smith lived to the ripe old age of 83; died on November 6, 1884. Sarah, his wife was born December 6, 1806 in Tennessee; she died in 1892; her maiden name was Sarah J. Miler, a daughter of John Miler (her stone reads "mother of Alf Smith"). John Miler was the oldest person that we found in Brush Creek Cemetery, born in Virginia on December 9, 1770; he came to Morgan County, Illinois before 1828 and came to Cumberland County around 1850; he died on September 5, 1858, aged 78 years, 8 months and 27 days................... *********************************************************** >From the Jasper County Internet Page: When you're out "tramping" the cemeteries, don't you ever wonder about the exquisite carvings on the tombstones and what those carvings mean? Here is some of the terminology from back then........ The term "relict" on a tombstone means that the woman was a widow at the time of her death. The term "consort" on a tombstone means that her husband survived her. The term "cenotaph" engraved on a tombstone indicates an empty grave, with the stone erected in honor or memory of a person elsewhere (often erected in honor of a person lost at sea or war) Meanings: *Arches---victory in death *Arrows---mortality *Bouquets, Flowers- -grief, condolences, sorrow *Roses---brevity of earthly existence *Portals---passageway to eternal journey *Bugles---resurrection and the military *Crossed Swords---high-ranking military person *Flying Birds---flight of the soul *Fruit---eternal plenty *Garlands---victory in death *Thistles---remembrance *Trees--- life *Trumpeters---heralds of the resurrection *Willows---earthly sorrow *Morning Glory---beginning of life *Butterfly---short-lived, early death *Ivy---friendship and immortality *Laurel-fame or victory *Oak Leaves & Acorn---maturity, ripe old age *Corn---ripe old age *Lamb---innocence (usually used for children) *Dove--- innocence, gentleness, affection, purity *Cherub---angelic *Anchor/ships---hope or seafaring profession *Broken Ring---family circle severed *Broken Column---loss of head of family *Urn with Blaze---undying friendship *Hourglass---swiftness of time *Winged Effigies---flight of the soul........ ********************************************************************** Index of Deaths at Brush Creek Cemetery Cemetery was read by Violet McCandish in 1969 Cemetery read by Winona E.
