Obituary of Francis MAY, DeWitt County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Earliene Kaelin Name of Deceased: Francis MAY Name of Newspaper: Date of Newspaper: 28 February 1908 MAY Had Lived In Dewitt County Nearly All His Life; Had Been a Resident of Clinton for Over One Year Francis MAY was the third old soldier of Clinton to answer the last roll call within ten days, the others being Thos. HENSON and A. J. VINSON. About three years ago he was stricken with paralysis and was compelled to retire from farming. He bought a house on North Jackson avenue which he occupied fifteen months ago. For some time he had been falling in health and for several weeks had been able to go about but little. Deceased was born in Ross county, Ohio, July 19, 1835, and was nearly 74 years old. His parents David and Sarah MAY came to this county when he was young, and this had since been his home. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. B. of the 107th and served nearly three years. He returned home in 1865, and February 22, 1867, he was married to Miss Eliza BALDWIN; his death was on the forty-first anniversary of their marriage. They lived in Harp township until moving to Clinton. Besides his wife he is survived by the following children; Mrs. Henry LAMPE, of Harp township; Mrs. T. KENNAMON, Seaton, Illinois; Edward, East Clinton; Harry who lives on the home farm and Miss Hattie at home. He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters of whom Jacob, Henry and Cyrus and Mrs. S. E. NEWELL live in or near Clinton; Mrs. DAVENPORT in Vernon Texas, and Mrs. STAPLEHURST in Nebraska. He was a member of the M. P. church and of the G.A.R Funeral services were held in the M.P. church Monday at 2 o'clock conducted by J. P. COLLIER of the M.P. church. The G.A.R had charge of the remains and conducted services of the order.
