Spencer Name of Newspaper: Clinton Register Date of Newspaper: 9/4/1877 Spencer: Samuel S. SPENCER, one of the first settlers of the county, was buried on Wednesday of last week. Elder Thompson, of the Christian Church, delivered a very impressive funeral sermon. Name of Newspaper: The Clinton Public Date of Newspaper: 7 September 1877 Samuel S. SPENCER, another old settler of DeWitt County, passed over the shores of time September 4, at his residence. Uncle Sam moved from Sangamon County, this state, in the year 1830. He has lived on his farm about 46 years. When he first settled here he had a horse mill for grinding corn and wheat. People would come to his mill for forty miles around to get their meal and flour. His age was about eighty-six years. Elder THOMPSON preaches his funeral discourse at the Christian Church. The Clinton Public Uncle Sammy SPENCER died at his residence in Long Point, after a brief illness. He was one of the earliest settlers in Long Point, having at one time owned a large tract of land. He gave his children a good farm each. He has been afflicted for some twenty years.
