Obituary of Thomas GORMAN, DeWitt County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Earliene Kaelin Name of Deceased: Thomas GORMAN Name of Newspaper: Date of Newspaper: 6 March 1914 GORMAN OLD RESIDENT DIED MONDAY Thomas GORMAN Had Been a Resident of Clinton For More Than Fort Years Monday morning at his home on North Elizabeth Street in this city occurred the death of Thomas GORMAN at the age of nearly 88 years. Death occurred at 11:15, caused by a complication of diseases, the result of advanced years. Mr. GORMAN was well known to all of the older and most of the younger residents of Clinton and vicinity. Although of a quiet disposition, he was always sociable in his manner with all who made his acquaintance. Thomas GORMAN was born in Ireland, where he was united in marriage to Mary BRODWICK in 1864, following the marriage the couple came to America, settling first in Heyworth, Ill. and after a short residence there came to Clinton, which had since been their home. For many years after coming to Clinton, Mr. GORMAN filled the position of section foreman for the Illinois Central, and later when to old to fill the position, was made flagman at the North Center street crossing. About this time the I.C. pension rule came into effect and Mr. GORMAN had the opportunity to quit work on account of his age, but was retained for quite a time, as he expressed the unwillingness to stop work. Nine children were the fruits of this union, all of whom together with the widow survive. Following are the children: Mrs. Geo. KAMMELER, Mrs. Charles CACKLEY, Dennis GORMAN, Mrs. George MORSE, Mrs. John BRIGHT and Miss Jane GORMAN, all of this city; Joseph GORMAN of Decatur, Mrs. Charles HENRY of St. Louis, and Edgar G. GORMAN of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Deceased was a member of St. John's Catholic church of Clinton. Funeral services were held from the above church at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning. Father HEARN officiating.
