Drafted in Rowan County, North Carolina in Capt. John Johnson’s company, Major Berringer’s Battalion, Colonel Matthew Locke’s Regiment commanded by general Rutherford and marched in the month of [blank] in the year 177[blank] against the Cherokee Indians, marching to the valley towns on Tennessee River and served three months. At the time Bryant, the tory colonel came into Rowan county in North Carolina, entered State service of NC as a minute man under Lieutenant James Chapman in Col Matthew Locke’s Regiment for one month and was in the skirmish with the tories at the junction of Rock and Yadkin Rivers under Col. Locke. Frequently engaged in skirmishes with the tory bands and in defending the country from tory depredations; that so continual and incessant were the calls by the officers of said minute men that he was almost wholy prevented from raising any crop for three seasons. States that so urgent was the call for men in the army that he and 19 more hired a man and put him into the service for the continental army. Received no written discharge. Born in Frederick county in the State of Maryland 7 February 1753; this he gives from a copy of the register of his age taken in Frederick County, Maryland. After the close of the war he returned to Frederick county and resided there about 10 years then moved to Woodford county, Kentucky and about 6 years ago moved from said Woodford County, Kentucky into Edgar county, Illinois where he has lived ever since. States when he was a Private in Minute Men in North Carolina, under James Chapman in Matthew Locke’s Regiment they pursued Bryant & his tories down to the mouth of Rocky river at Calsels (or Colsons) and there a battle ensued; many tories slain and wounded and the balance fled. Five days after had a skirmish with some other tories at Mass’ [?] ferry on Pedee. Commanded sometimes by John Rutledge, Ensign and were frequently engaged in skirmishes, but the precise time of each term he cannot now recollect, and except for the Cherokee expedition was never without the limits of North Carolina.
