Obituary of Amanda Francis Arterburn CORNWELL, Edgar County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Cindy McCachern Obituary of Amanda Francis Arterburn Cornwell Kansas Journal, 18 Jan 1917 & 11 Jan 1917 Amanda Frances Arterburn, daughter of Wm. and Melinda Arterburn was born Feb 28, 1841, near Louisville, KY, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Waters near Ashmore, Jan 6, 1917, aged 75 years, 11 months and 22 days. She came to Edgar county at the age of eight years with her parents where she lived until her marriage to James L. Cornwell, June 14, 1866. Her husband departed this life about eight years ago. Seven children were given to this marriage, three of them dying in early life, the following remaining to mourn her loss: Mrs. W. F. Waters, Ashmore, Vance A. Cornwell, Tuscola; Leonard H. Cornwell, Welsh, LA, and Mrs. Charles Kennedy, Ardmore, OK. Also seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren and one brother, Rholey Arterburn, of this city. She was converted at the age of fifteen years and united with the Christian church near Kansas, and later moved her membership to the Methodist church, Westfield where it remained until her death. She leaves a record of a conscientious Christian, a noble and true mother, and a good neighbor. Her desire was to live for her children, yet she said many times that she was ready to go when the time should come. Besides the immediate members of the family she leaves a host of friends adn relatives to mourn her loss. A recent visit to Oklahoma with her daughter and returning to Ashmore to visit with her people. The death of Mrs. Amanda Frances Cornwell, widow of Jas. L. Cornwell, of Westfield, took place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Waters, residing west of Ashmore, Saturday afternoon, January 6. The deceased was a sister of Rholley Arterburn of this place, and was quite well known here. Those from here who attended the funeral services at Ashmore, Tuesday, were: Mr. and Mrs. Rholley Arterburn, Mrs. Mollie Arterburn and daughter--Nettie, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Zimmermann, Mr. and Mrs. Cornwell, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Wilhoff, J. K.
