Obituary of Richard Hamilton CHILDRESS, Edgar County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Cindy McCachern Obituary of Richard Hamilton Childress   Thursday, 20 November 1924 The funeral service of Richard Hamilton Childress or "Uncle Ham" as he was familiarly called,, aged 78 years, was held on Wednesday afternoon of last week in the Christian church at Oakland.  Elder J. J. Hudson officiated.  Interment followed in St. Omer cemetery.   Mr. Childress was one of the older residents of Oakland.  He had been in failing health for some time but few knew his condition was so serious. Richard Hamilton Childress, son of Richard Hamilton and Rebecca Childress, was born near Kansas, in Jan 2, 1846, and deaprted this life at his home in Oakland, Nov. 11, 1924, aged 78 years, 10 months and 9 days. In 1866 he was united in marriage to Barbara E. Clapp near Kansas, and sonn moved to Douglas county, south of Hindsboro.  To this union were born twelve children of whom six survive; Lydia Mapes, Oakland; Mary E. Mapes, Martinsville; John F. Hindsboro; Joseph, Oscar and Edward, of near Oakland.  Wm. S., Samantha, Sarah A., Linnie E., Dora A. and Richard H. preceded him to the great beyond.  His wife, Barbara E., passed away Nov. 14, 1889, near Hindsborao.  A few years later he was married to Ellen Honn, of near Ashmore, who also preceded him in death.   Most of Mr. Childress' life was spent in Oakland and near Hindsboro.
