Obituary of James H Kirkham, Edgar County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Cindy McCachern Obituary of James H. Kirkham Kansas (IL) Journal, 18 May 1911 On Wednesday of last week occurred the death of James H. Kirkham, one of Edgar County's oldest citizens and a veteran of the Civil War. Mr. Kirkham was born in 1840, and on the 21st of May would have rounded out his 71 years. Having been in failing health for the past year, Mr. Kirkham bought property in the south side of town, and with his wife and daughter removed from the farm to Kansas Village in September of last year. Within a few days, his wife (who was Martha Ann Redman) was stricken with her last illness, and in October 1910, she passed away. At the time of her demise, Mr. Kirkham was in such an enfeebled condition, that the family despaired of his surviving. Shortly after, however, his strength seemed to build again and Mr. Kirkham removed to his farm home again, where with his son Claud, he hoped to make his home and pass his remaining days among familiar surroundings. One week before his death, he was striken with complete paralysis of the right side, and gradually sinking under the seizure, passed out, May 10th. Funeral services were held at the home five miles south of Kansas, May 11th. Rev. F. H. Thomas of Mattoon conducting the services at the house and G. A. R. Post reading the burial service at the grave. Music was furnished by the Meadames. Stephenson and Payne, Mssrs. Woodruff and Boyer. The surviving children are two sons, James Hilton and Claud; four daughters; Mrs. James Hayes, Mrs. John Hayes, Mrs. Arthur Hayes, and Miss Kate Kirkham, also four grandchildren, one brother, Barber Kirkham of Westfield and three sisters, Mrs. George Estes, Mrs. Laura Keran of Edgar Co. and Mrs. Snyder of Casey, Ill. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations or persons.
