WILLIAMS CEMETERY The cemetery is located in Fayette Co., IL, in the middle of a heavily wooded area on land now owned by Harmon Doyle. There is no road to the cemetery. To reach the cemetery go north from Vera approximately 2 miles to road 2200N, go 3/4 mile east, cross an old railroad bed and go up the hill. Turn into a grassy lane to the left (north) at the top of the hill. Most of road 2200N is very muddy and impassable in wet weather. Walk about 200 yards west in the woods; the cemetery is difficult to see due to dense underbrush and trees. There is a gate with a sign on the south entrance. The gate has been wired shut and will not open. Benjamin Williams originally purchased the land (80 acres) where the cemetery is located on 17 June, 1825. He purchased an additional 80 adjacent acres on 18 January, 1836. Benjamin died in 1874 and is buried here. The first burial is Eveline Williams in 1852 and the last was Harold O. Williams in 1930. There are six Civil War veterens buried here. There are a total of 68 burials, 44 with the last name of Williams. The cemetery has fell into disrepair in recent years, it is choked with weeds and small trees and the fence had fallen over. There are several large stones overturned by vandals and a few stones have been broken. Family members from Texas are now in the process of clearing off the cemetery and the fence has been repaired.
