Fayette County Illinois Newspaper Obituary The Vandalia Union thursday June 9, 1932 Henry BESS Buried Funeral services for Henry BESS were conducted Saturaday afternoon in the Bethel church with the Rev. A. C. BROWN of Greenville, Ill. officiating, Burial was Browning Cemetery. Henry BESS was born near Dayton, Ohio (I think this is wrong, I believe it was Tuscarawas Co, Ohio), November 1850 and departed this life at his farm home in Fayette Co, Ill. near Vandalia,June 2, 1932 at the age of 82 years 6 Months and 8 days. On August 15, 1876, he was united in marriage to Sarah Elizabeth ELMORE, who survives him. To this union were six girls and three boys. Thirty-three grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren survive. The children are Mrs.Edith CARTER, of near Bingham, Ill., Mrs. Ethel HERBERT(was HEBERT) of Flint, Michigan, Buell BESS at home with his mother (never married), Mrs. Myrtle SIX, of Arthur, Ohio, Niles BESS, of near Vandalia, Ill., Mrs. Eloise WHITE, at home with her mother, Mrs Mamie HINES(newspaper error it was Morna HIMES, my grandmother) of near Vandalia, Ill., Mrs Edna MCFADDEN , of Seneca, Oregon and Clemma BESS who preceeded his father in infancy. He (Henry) was converted 29 years ago and united with the Bethal Baptist Church where he remained a faithful member until death. During his long illness he bore his suffering with patience. He was of a kind and loving disposition and love by all who knew him (my father says this is true he was a kind and gentle grandfather to him a tall bearded man with large hands and sandy hair). He said this world was full of sin and suffering, but he was ready to go and was going to that world where all was rest and happiness. This was the obituary of my great-grandfather Henry BESS son of Abraham/Absolum BESS/BEST and Sarah MCDONOUGH. Henry walked with wagon train to Illinois at age 17 years. Family tradition say his parents died in wagon train camp beside river (maybe Kaskaskia River) of epedemic (maybe typhoid fever, many mosquitos along river & swampy areas). They were supposedly buried beside a river bank.
