Obit of James Newton Dated in ink as July 21, 1954. Newspaper unknown but probably the Johnston City Progress. Uncle Jim Newton Dies; Funeral Friday at 2 P.M. James H. (Uncle Jim) Newton, 88, life-long resident of this community, passed away at 3 pm Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ethel Grant, 705 W. 8th Street, following a month's illness. Funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at the First Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor Rev. Charles R. Walker. Burial will follow at Old Rose Hill cemetery at Marion. Mr. Newton was born one mile south of this city on Nov 17, 1865, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Boyd Newton. Following his retirement as a farmer, he moved to this city, living at 306 W. 8th Street until about 18 months ago when he moved to the home of his daughter Mrs. Ethel Grant, widow of Gus Grant who was killed in the West Frankfort mine explosion, seven years ago this week, July 24, 1947. Besides his daughter, he leaves a son, Charles Newton of St. Louis; two grand children and four great-grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death Dec 3, 1952. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Masons, Mississippi Valley Consistory and the Modern Woodmen.
