Obit of Walter Newton Dated in ink as June 15, 1949 (notation says Buried June 18). Newspaper unknown but probably Marion. Walter Newton, Johnston City Pioneer, Dies Walter H. Newton, 78, pioneer of Williamson county and life-long resident of Johnston City community died at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Bert Wilkins, 507 West Eighth Street in Johnston City, where he has made his home for the past few years. Newton was a retired farmer and teamster. He was a charter member of the Modern Woodman of America Lodge at Johnston City. His wife, the late Malissa Frances Atwood Newton, died about eight years ago (Notation in ink says "12 years") In addition to Mrs. Wilkins, he is survived by five other daughters, Mrs. Herbert Vaughn, Desoto; Mrs. Beulah Lawrence, Thompsonville; Mrs. Mary Newton, Chicago; Mrs. Bert Snyder of Pinckneyville, and Mrs. Lester Jones of Johnston City; three brothers (brothers is marked out in pen and "SONS" written above it) Harry Newton of Gary Ind.; Thomas Newton of Riverside and John Newton of Johnston City. Two sisters, Mrs. Anna Murrah and Mrs. Maude Whittington of Johnston City. Ten grandchildren, and three great grand children also survive. The body is lying in state at the Wilkins home in Johnston city where funeral rites will be held at 2 pm Saturday afternoon, with Rev. T. Leo Dodd of Eldorado officiating, assisted by Rev. Frank Tebow of Johnston City. Burial will be in Johnston City cemetery.
