Transcribed from an unidentified newspaper clipping, 1903. The obituary of Jackson CARTER b. February 24, 1815 Fayette Co., KY d. March 29, 1903 Cuba. Fulton Co., IL. PIONEER GONE _______ Jackson Carter, for Sixty Years a Resident of Fulton Co Passes Away ___ On Sunday afternoon at about 1:50 o'clock, Jackson Carter.confined to his bed for some three weeks from the ail- ments incident to old age, passed to that bourne from which no traveler re- turns. His death was not unexpected, and with one unavoidable exception the immediate members of his family were at the bedside when dissolution came. The mother and children are none the less bowed down because the blight of death was inevitable. Jackson Carter had lived to that grand old age when the frailties and animosities of youth are forgotten. For more than 60 years a resident of Fulton county, and Lewiston township, it is remarkable that he was absolutely free from machinations of any character. He was known everywhere in the com- munity where he lived so long and en- joyed the respect and love of everyone with whom he came in contact. The deceased came from old Virginia stock, the son of Thomas and Barbara Carter, who emigrated from that state and established a home in the then wilds of Kentucky. and there Jackson Carter was born February 24, 1815 in Fayette county, and on his last birthday had reached the ripe old age of 88 years. About 60 years ago he removed from his native state to Illinois, settling in Lew- istown township, and a year after his arrival in this county he was married to Harriet Jane Riley, a resident of the same locality. This event occurred April 25, 1844, and this couple resided together until his death intervened, a period of nearly 59 years. To this union was born seven children, six of whom are living, and their names in the order of their ages are Mrs. Sarah Campbell of Deland, Ill; Mrs. Atha O'Brien.Lew- istown; Mrs. Eldora Porter, Deland; Everett Carter. Lewistown; Mrs. Almeda Miller, (deceased in October, 1899); Quincy Carter, Sidell, Vermillion county; Mrs. Jessie Wertman, Lewistown. All the children were born on the old home place, about five miles northeast of Lewistown, and the farm now occupied by James O'Brien. Twenty eight grandchildren, and 77 direct descend- ants, are numbered in the family, Mr. and Mrs. Carter moved to town about 16 years ago, and have enjoyed the com- petence fairly and laboriosly accumu- lated, This couple in the long years of their lives have done much to advance the material interest of the community in which they lived, and the man whose death has caused grief to all Lewistown was of sterling material, unimpeachable in the minor affairs of life. So should all men live; his passing away has left another vacancy in the ranks of the pioneers of Fulton county and the state of Illinois. Mr. Carter. while a member of a fam- ily of eight children, has one sister only living--Mrs. Nancy Kelly of Canton who will have reached the advanced age of95 years in next June. Mrs. Kelly will not be able to attend the funeral services. Mrs. Ann Little, a sister of the widow has been summoned from Ver- mont. She is also of advanced age-84 years. The funeral will occur from the Meth- odist Episcopal church Tuesday after noon at 1 o'clock, the Rev. John Rogers officiating. The deceased had been a working member of the congregation for 61 or 62 years, and had been honored with the peace and quiet of the knowl- edge of works well done. Interment will be at Oak Hill. The casket will be open at the house tomorrow from 10 o'clock a.m. to 12:30 p.m., where friends may view the remains.
