Melrose wendelmelrose@earthlink.net December 3, 2007, 10:53 am Fulton County Ledger - July 10, 1860 Obituary for James Melrose Newspaper – Fulton County Ledger – Canton, Fulton county, Illinois Date: 10 July 1860 Location of record: Carlin Library, Canton, Illinois on microfilm Tuesday Morning, July 10, 1860 JAMES MELROSE At Canton, Illinois, on Thursday the 5th instant, of complicated Bronchitis and Gastritis, Rev. James Melrose departed from this natural life to the spiritual world, aged 46 years. His funeral took place in this city on Friday last at 2 o’clock PM. The number of his friends in attendance was very large. Rev. Thomas Storry conducted the services. Rev. James Melrose has been the pastor of the New Church Society of Canton, Illinois for the last fourteen years, in which office he was highly esteemed as a truthful teacher of the doctrines of the New Jerusalem Church. And in numerous families both within and without the church he held and deserved the character of a beloved physician. He was born in Northumberland county, England, September 19th,1813, At the age of twenty-one he sought his fortune in the New World. Arrived in New York in the year 1833 or ‘4 without friends or money. He employed his time in study and lecturing upon various scientific subjects, the most prominent of which was the study of man – mental and physical. We find him thus employed until he had completed his medical education. In 1840 or ’41 he completed the practice of medicine, as an allopathic physician. As a man, he was hightly esteemed by a large circle of friends by whom his loss with be deeply regretted. A good man has gone to the spirit land. Additional Comments: Notes: James Melrose was the son of John Melrose and Susanna Melrose of Felton, Northumberland, England. Susanna died about 14 Aug 1815 according to the Felton parish burial register. Her maiden surname is not noted in the death record and I did not find a marriage record in the Alnwick deanery records listings. Timeline – age of 21 arrival at New York would be the year of 1834.. Completed physician training in 1840 or ’41 age would be 27or 28 yrs old. He married Jane Leonora Thayer on 4 April 1848 at Canton. His age at date of marriage would be about 35 years. A son, James W. Melrose, was born about Feb. 23, 1847…. So perhaps Jane isn’t his mother. There is another James Melrose marriage to Elizabeth F. Robinson listed in Greene county, Illinois, dated 4 July 1843. James W. Melrose died in San Francisco on 14 Jan 1906 before the earthquake. Jane married Underhill Boynton on 20 May 1862.
