James A. Patton, son of William R. and Mary Patton, was born 10 Feb. 1860, departed this life 11 Oct. 1931 at his daughter, Mrs. Ollie Woods, being at the time of his death 71 years 8 months and 1 day of age. His entire life was spent in this community and was united in marriage to Miss Sarah C. Stilly Oct. 20th. 1881. To this union was born nine children, namely: Mrs Ollie Woods, Mrs. Laura Williams, Mrs. Lizzie Potter, Mrs Mary Woods, Mr Bratcher Patton all of near Kedron, IL., Mr. Frank Patton of Flora, IL., Mr Andrew Patton of Marion, IN. Willis and Alfred who preceeded their parents to that great beyond, several years ago. He professed hope in Christ about 39 years ago and for several years has been a loyal and faithful member of Green Valley Church. His wife passed on to her reward 11 years ago and until poor health prevented, he lived at the old home where he loved and cherished the memories of his dear companion. He leaves besides his seven children 30 grandchildren, 11 great granchildren, a living mother 92 years old, four sisters and one brother namely: Mrs Maranda Colbert, Eldorado, IL., Mrs. Nancy Scroggins, of Derby, IL., Mrs Francis Barnett of Equality, IL., Hannah Patton and Morgan Patton, who lives at the old home with the aged mother. These with many other relatives and friends mourn his passing. All that loving hands could do was done to prolong his life but to no avail, and in his last sickness he often left the assurance that he was ready and anxious to go, where sickness and death never come and parting is no more. In his parting the children will miss counsel and advise, of kind and loving father. The church a faithful and devoted member, the community a worthy honored citizen. But our lose is his eternal gain, and we mourn not as for one who has no hope.
