White Hall Register Greene County, Illinois, Vol. VI,  Saturday, April 10, 1875, Number 34
Mr. Wm. Allen, who died at New Providence last Sunday, was an 1819 man, and one 
of the few that came to the county thus early. He was father-in-law of Ex-
sheriff Bell and Wm. Ridings, two leading citizens of that place. Mr. Allen had 
lived a long, useful and prosperous life, and died surrounded by everything 
heart could wish, for himself or his posterity.

Additional Comments:
William Allen, son of Thomas and Margery Bryan Allen, was born in North 
Carolina in 1793; emigrated to Greene County, Ill., in 1818; was one among the 
oldest settlers of that county; entered 80 acres of land from the Government in 
1824, and commenced as a farmer on the unbroken soil of Greene County. Was 
married to Mary Pinkerton who was born in Virginia in 1798. He died in Greene 
County, 1874, at the age of eighty-two. His wife died in 1863, at the age of 
seventy-one.
