Obituary of William Ridings, Greene County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Mary Hillman Carrollton Patriot, 7 November 1906 The funeral of William Ridings, the venerable pioneer who died October 31,1906 occurred at his home, four miles southwest of White Hall, Friday forenoon.  The Republican gives the following sketch of his life. William Ridings was born in Surry county, North Carolina, December 21, 1822, and came with his parents to Greene Co. in 1835, and located near the present Ridings homestead.  His parents were Isaac and Susanna Chinn Ridings. On Jan 28, 1845 he and Mary Ann Allen were married.  They have lived continuously at or near their present home since their marriage, except for a brief residence at White Hall.  Their three children are Mrs. Sarah Driver of Carrollton, Nellie wife of John C. Woods, near Belltown and Frank of the vicinty of Wrightsville.  Mrs. Ridings is in her 82 year.  She was born within less than a mile of her present home. Mr. Ridings leaves one brother Perry, near Berdan and a sister  Mrs. Ezekiel Edwards near Palmyra.  On February 4, 1905 Mr. and Mrs. Ridings celebrated their sixtieth anniversary of their marriage, on which occasion a large number of relatives and old friends were present. Mr. Ridings was a careful business man and a successful farmer.  At his death he owned large farms adjoining his homestead and on Lorton's Prairie, also in Christian County.
