Behnke which was found in the family Bible of Lucy and Alfred French by F. Cooke At the family residence, five miles northeast of Greenfield, Dec 26, 1884, William W. Williams departed this life in his ninety-fourth year. He was born in North Carolina near the Virginia Line on July 9th, in the year of 1791. At a youthful age he became an orphan and was thrown upon his own resources which has been one of success, financially and otherwise. When he arrived at the age of seventeen years he left his native state and moved to and settled near Winchester, Ky, where he was united in marriage to Miss Lydia Whitehurst. From that place he moved to Jacksonville, IL, in the year 1831 and there remained two years. Next he came to Greene Co and settled on the farm from whence he was carried to the silent tomb, Sunday, Dec 28th, 1884. He was the father of six children. The eldest, Mary ann, married John H. Waller; the second, Eliza, Edwin Henderson; Martha E, who is now Mrs. M. E. Metcalf, and resides in Jacksonville. Newton was drowned on the 18th of June, 1850, while in attendance at the McKindree college; William H., also died the same year and while attending the same college; and Milton Williams who is now a resident of Greenfield. Of this highly respectable family the parents had just cause to feel proud, as they have been, and are, an honor to their fathers name. After the death of his wife on April 29th, 1858, the deceased was married to Mrs Maria O'Flynn who survives him. "Uncle Billy", as he was familiarly called, had passed the age of fourscore and ten. He had lived a life of purity, honesty, and industry and had accumulated a nice amount of property, together with a good name, that will live after him. The burial took place from the family residence. Funeral services preached by the Rev. D. H. Stubblefield. Interred in the family burial grounds.
