He was born in England, September 1, 1825, a son of William Brown, a soldier in the English army. John Brown came to Morris about 1865, although he had been living in Grundy County for some fifteen years prior to that date. He served Grundy County as Supervisor from Aux Sable Township, and was a member of the Morris School Board. In 1875, he bought what was known as the Hopkins House and conducted it for five years, but after that devoted himself to his drug business which he had established upon locating at Morris. In 1850 Mr. Brown married Ann Brown, born in 1826, and they had nine children.
