D. HITCHCOCK, County Clerk, Morris, born in Champlain, Clinton, Co., N. Y., August 16, 1857; son of H. D. HITCHCOCK, born at same place in 1827. The father came to Morris in November 1867, and was Deputy Clerk four years. In 1877, was elected Clerk, in which capacity he served till the time of his death, which occurred April 7, 1880. His wife, Mary J. (CUTTING) HITCHCOCK, was a native of Westport, Essex Co., N. Y., born in 1833. She now lives with her son (subject) in Morris. The parents raised three children - one son (subject), and two daughters. Our subject was educated at the High School at Morris, and began life in the dry goods business as salesman, which he followed some six years. From there, he came into the Clerk's office as Deputy under his father, and after his father's death he was elected to fill the unexpired term. Republican in politics; belongs to the Masonic order.
