J. Keepers, farmer, P. O. Gardner, was born in Beaver County, Penn., in March, 1829, and settled on his present farm in April, 1866. When he was but a small boy, his father moved to Guernsey County, Ohio, and there he lived till he came to Grundy County. He received his education chiefly in Ohio, but attended school a short time in Pennsylvania. In Guernsey County, Ohio, August 22, 1850, he married Miss Mary Kimble, a native of that county, and by this union they have been blessed with six children, all of whom, save one, were born in Ohio. Mr. Keepers has made farming his chief occupation, but he followed saw-milling in Ohio for some time. In September, 1864, he enlisted in the One Hundred and Seventy-sixth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and served till the close of the war, the regiment being stationed at Nashville, Tenn., the greater part of the time. He has lately sold his farm and bought another of 160 acres, located in the same township, three and one-half miles west of Gardner. He began life without any means, renting land at first, and by industry and economy has accumulated his present property. He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church; he is a Republican and been one ever since the organization of that party. Their children are William I., Mary J., Joseph H., Caroline O., Hannah Myrtle and Olive W. Mr. Keepers is a son of Joseph and Hannah Keepers, who were born in Chester County, Penn., where they remained for some years, and, after their marriage, moved to Beaver County, Penn. Joseph Keepers died in Guernsey County, Ohio, December 6, 1842; his wife came to Illinois and died at her daughter's house in Iroquois County, April 28, 1872. Subject's wife is a daughter of Adam and Mary Kimble, who were born in Pennsylvania; came to Ohio when young, and died in Guernsey County, that State.
