Y., and had but one brother, Edward. Mr. Phelan came at an early age with his parents to Illinois, where he grew to manhood, being engaged in farming. On October 10, 1876, John Phelan was united in marriage to Sarah McClintock, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McClintock, and to their union was born eight children: Margaret, Edward, John, Hugh, Sade, Will, Mary and Catherine. In 1902 Mr. Phelan purchased a farm in Grundy County, which he cultivated until his death, which occurred December 13, 1910. At the time of his death he owned 520 acres of land in the southwestern part of Grundy County. In his religious belief Mr. Phelan was a staunch Catholic. He belonged to the Republican party, but took no active part in politics, although always interested in the general welfare of the community.
