Here, amid urban surroundings, they can enjoy the comforts their former industry has produced. One of these substantial ex-agriculturalists of Grundy County is Horace H. Severns, born in Wauponsee Township, February 5, 1854, a son of Horace H. and Mary A. (Ader) Severns, natives of New York State and Germany, respectively. She came with her parents to the vicinity of Chicago, and later to Grundy County, arriving here in 1850. Mr. Severns came to this section about that date, and they met and married, settling at Morris. This city was their home for about four years, when they moved to Wauponsee Township. While living at Morris he had been foreman on the canal, but he bought a farm in Wauponsee Township and died upon it, in 1867. His widow resides at Aurora, Ill., with her twin sister, the two having been born in 1832. Horace H. Severns, Jr., lived at home until his marriage, having attended the local school, and assisted his father. After his marriage he moved to a farm of 120 acres in Wauponsee Township that he had bought, and operated it until the spring of 1910, when he rented his farm and moved to Morris. Mr. Severns bought what was Grace Park, now named Morris Amusement Pavilion, and is engaged in conducting it. On December 21, 1880, Mr. Severns was united in marriage with Laura A. Lattimer, born in Grundy County, daughter of Silas and Mary (Schroyer) Lattimer, who were farming people in Grundy County. Mr. Lattimer died in 1898, but his widow survives, living at Nickerson, Kas., aged eighty-three years. Mr. and Mrs. Severns are the parents of the following children: Lottie A., who married William Alfred Thomas, a real estate dealer of Morris; Otto K., who is of Morris; and Altha M., who is at home. Mr. Severns is a Republican and served as a School Director for twelve years, Highway Commissioner for twelve years, and for six years was Supervisor. He belongs to the Modern Woodmen of America and the Odd Fellows. pages 898-899 Additional Comments: Source: History of Grundy County, Illinois, Chicago: Munsell Publishing Co.
