He was born at Wilmington, Ill., November 25, 1868, a son of Patrick and Bridget (Kavanaugh) Shelley, natives of Ireland, who after marriage, came to Jersey City, N. Y., and later to Grundy County, Ill. They were among the early settlers of what was then known as Jugtown. The mother died in 1875, and the father died at Coal City in 1893. They had eight children: Daniel and Daniel (II), both of whom are deceased; Timothy, who is deceased; and Margaret, Catherine Owens, Thomas, John J. and Michael. Thomas F. Shelley attended school in Will County, Ill., and in boyhood worked for farmers. Following this he learned the carpenter trade at Braidwood, Ill., and in 1890 came to Coal City, where he engaged with James McKinley, remaining with him until 1901. Mr. Shelley then purchased his present business, and owns both the store and shop he occupies. He carries a full line of horse furnishings on hand at all times, and is prepared to do various kinds of work in his line. On August 24, 1910, Mr. Shelley was married in Canyon City, Colo., to Mary H. Stewart, born in Scotland, and one child was born of this marriage, who died in infancy. The Catholic Church holds his membership and benefits from his loyal support. Fraternally he belongs to the White Cross Order and in national matters he votes the Republican ticket, but in local affairs is very liberal. For two years he served Coal City as a trustee and is a responsible man who is able to perform any duties placed upon his willing shoulders. pages 899-900 Additional Comments: Source: History of Grundy County, Illinois, Chicago: Munsell Publishing Co.
