Startled cemetery trustees, however, discovered 26 bodies were contained within the crumbling facility - three more than the count indicated before the crypts were unsealed. One of the three, David Barnes, was identified from trustees' records. The other two were not identified and buried as un- knowns, noted Charles Adkins, president of the Mazon Brookside Cemetery Association. "We know from the records who the one vault was sold to, but we don't know who was in it," he said earlier today. "The other body interred beneath this one was probably from his family, but we put it down in the record as unknown because we don't know that for certain." Adkins said there were no markings on the marble frontings sealing the crypts. "We were surprised when we took out the marble and found the caskets," he said. "It surprised us all. It was something that just didn't get taken care of at the time, I guess." Constructed as a private enterprise more than 100 years ago, the mausoleum is being razed in the near future - the victim of time and lack of money for its care and upkeep. The group that built the mausoleum eventually disbanded, leaving no money to the cemetery association to maintain the facility. No members of that group exist today. Up to 50 crypts were built inside the mausoleum. Relatives and descendants removed 15 to 18 bodies from the facility during the 1960s and 1970s for burial elsewhere. Repairs or new construction, Adkins said, would cost several hundred thousand dollars in money the cemetery association does not have. Even though trustees feel the mausoleum does not belong to the association, Adkins said the interment and razing project was undertaken because of a certain sense of responsibility, as the facility is located within the cemetery. The disinterment and burial began Tuesday, with trustees donating their time to the project. Grundy Co. Coroner John Callahan and Deputy Coroner Karen Connor provided professional assistance. Trustees found some caskets marked with nameplates. Others were unmarked, but identified through the association's records. The majority of caskets, dating from the 1900s to the last interment in the 1950s, were metal and in presentable condition. The wood caskets constructed prior to the 1900s were badly deteriorated, said Adkins. Each casket was placed in a cement vault for burial. The caskets were placed in lots - seven each in three lots and five others in the fourth lot. "The families are all grouped together in the lots, with man and wife side-by-side," Adkins said. Individual tombstones will be placed on the graves next spring. Trustees will attempt to save the large cement nameplate above the doorway when the mausoleum is razed. The nameplate - which is in three sections - will be placed on the empty lot in the center of the graves, he said. Dedication ceremonies are tentative for the two local Civil War soldiers who were interred in the mausoleum and are now buried with their families in the lots situated southwest of the facility. Adkins said an area Civil War re-enactment group is considering the dedication, which would probably take place on a weekend. "We feel we tried to do (the project) the best we could, and hope- fully, people will like the way we've had it done," he said. Although the cost of the project is not known at this time, earlier estimates were about $10,000. The vaults alone totaled $5,200, said Adkins. "We're accepting donations for tombstones or anything else," he said. A Coal City resident recently sent the association $20. The resident did not have relatives in the mausoleum, but thought the money was for a good cause, Adkins said. The Mazon American Legion Post donated $700 to help with the costs associated with the two Civil War veterans, he said. Other donations have brought the total to nearly $1,000, Adkin noted. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Headline: Mausoleum comes down Date: 6/26/2003 1:24:00 PM Article : MAZON — Razing of the deteriorated mausoleum in Brookside Cemetery was nearing completion today. Charles Adkins, president of the Mazon Brookside Cemetery Assoc., said the crew on the project had the south end of the structure down and the roof caved in by Wednesday evening. The crew also removed the stone inscription above the door, along with three concrete angels decorating the mausoleum, and placed the pieces in storage for the time being. Tentative plans are to place the stone inscription and angels on an empty lot between the graves of the 26 bodies the association removed from the mausoleum last week, Adkins noted. "We'll have to see how thick the stone is and what we have to do to try to make it in the style of a monument," he said this morning. The razing is being done by Robert Brisco of Mazon, who will use the concrete from the mausoleum as riprap to stabilize waterways. Constructed in the latter 1800s as a private enterprise, the crumbling mausoleum eventually became the victim of time and of lack of money for its care and upkeep. No members of the group which constructed the mausoleum are alive today, Adkins said. He noted the association did not have funds to repair the mausoleum to an acceptable condition, if that would be possible, or to build a new mausoleum. Either option would cost the cash-strapped association several hundred thousand dollars, he said. Feeling a certain responsibility because the facility was located within the cemetery, the association voted in March to raze the structure. "I hope we did a good job," said Adkins. "We tried to do the best that we could do. It wasn't an individual decision - we got our heads together and made a corporate decision." Until the bills roll in, Adkins will not know just how much the venture is costing the association. The biggest expense was the purchase of vaults at $200 each for burial of the 26 bodies - a state requirement - plus incidentals associated with their removal from the mausoleum. A non-profit group of local volunteers, the Brookside Cemetery Association is continuing to accept donations to help offset some of the expenses associated with the move, Adkins said. "I hope this will then end the mausoleum episode," Adkins noted. "We're doing the best that we can. It wasn't the most fun job, ever, but we had a lot of good help and people who volunteered to assist."
