To the Editor of The Inter-Ocean In a notice in the Inter Ocean a few days since of the death of Jacob Claypool, of Grundy County, it was stated that he was a very eccentric individual. As a speciman of his eccentricity I send you the following, which appears of record at this place and was drawn up and recorded by the deceased himself: Jacob Claypool - Deed The People of the World. To All Whom These Presents Shall Come Greeting: Now, know ye that I, Jacob Claypool, citizen of the United States, by birth a Virginian, and now resident of Grundy County, and State of Illinois, have given, granted, donated, convey, and quit-claim unto the people of whatso-ever clime or county, faith or creed, religious or political, the following-described piece of parcel of land for, or as, a burying-ground or place of interment of the deceased of the human race, to be used as such, together with appropriate inclosures, head, foot, or tomb stones to perpetuate the memory of the deceased therein interred, agreeable to the liking or will of the surviving relatives or friends, and for no other purpose, forever, without money and without price. Here follows a description of the lot, which contains a little over an acre. Then appears the following: The said Jacob Claypool to and with the people aforesaid stipulates and agrees that they may henceforth and forever occupy said described lot, piece, or parcel of ground as above bounded for the uses and purposes herein mentioned and named. In testimony whereof I, Jacob Claypool, have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of July, in the year of our Lord 1847, and in the year of the world, according to the Hebrew text of the Scripture, 5851. Jacob Claypool. [Seal] File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/il/grundy/newspapers/oldjacob240gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/ilfiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
