In 1851 in company with his father, John, first came to Illinois making the journey on horse back. After a few months they returned to Ohio and in the following year, the spring of 1852, John again came west, and with his brother Jacob, settled in the old Samuel Holderman residence. In 1860 he returned to his native state and married on Feb. 26, Miss Phebe Patty, daughter of James and Margaret Hannah Patty, of Montgomery county, Ohio. Returning to Illinois with his bride, he settled in the new and beautiful house which he had previously made for her. Here for two score years they have lived and labored together in love, making for themselves and the children who have been given them, a home of affection, refinement and culture. Seven children were born to this home, of whom five together with the widow survive, Mrs. Elizabeth Cadwell, of Broken Bow, Neb., Frank, Mary B., Ella, and Harriet. All of these together with the only surviving sister of the deceased, Miss Elizabeth Holderman and niece Mrs. Wagoner, Emporia, Kansas, were present at the funeral. One other near relative only, Mrs. Samuel Coppock, of Tippicanoe, Ohio, an aunt, still remains. The funeral services were held at the family residence on the 10th of January at 10:30 a.m. Attended by a very large concourse of relatives, neighbors and friends. Rev. C. C. Lovejoy, past of the First M. E. church, conducted the services, speaking briefly from Ec. 1-4, "One generation passeth away and another generation cometh." A quartette from the Methodist church, Mrs. Steep, Mrs. Katie Buck, Messrs. Penn and Coles sang beautifully three of the sweetest hymns of the church, "Nearer my God to thee," "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and the beautiful hymn "The Sweet Home of the Soul." In early life the deceased made a profession of faith in Christ and joined the M. E. church upon probation, although he never because a member in full connection. As stated above, Mr. and Mrs. Holderman had several children of their own and yet, there always seemed to be room enough in their home and in their hearts for other children who needed a home and whom they could help. Who shall say that it may not be the happy privilege of those who render such generous and beneficient service to hear even in this life the sweet words of our Lord "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my bretheran, ye have done it unto me". The deceased during his long life enjoyed good general health and was untiring in his devotion to business and the interests of his family and friends. Since August 1897, however, by reason of a fall from a buggy his health has been seriouly impaired. For the past few weeks a complication of troubles aggravated his condition and finally bronchitis and heart disease carried him away. A host of friends extend to the bereaved famiy their sincere sympathy, and many a fervent prayer has been lifed to the All Father that his tenderest benedictions may rest them.
