Deceased was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in March, 1798. In 1825 he was married to Sabina Flood, and in 1846 they came to America and settled at Portsmouth, Va, where they resided until 1854 when they moved to Kendall county, Illinois, but remained in that county for a short time only, removing to this county the same year. For a time he lived in the old log house which stood at the south end of the river bridge. He engaged in farming which pursuit he followed until the death of his wife in 1877, when he came to town to live with his son Richard. Fourteen children were born to the couple, six of whom survive. Four of them, Richard, Patrick, Antony and Mike are residents of this county. One other son resides in Virginia and has not seen any of the family for a number of years, and another lives in Nebraska. At the outbreak of the civil war seven sons of John Hughes enlisted in defense of the old flag and did gallant service for the country of their adoption. Two died on the field of battle and the other five carry wounds received in service. John Hughes was a well preserved old man. He was never sick. His death resulted from old age—a wearing out of the machine. He was a temperate man throughout life, never indulging in the use of liquor to excess, and never knew the taste of tobacco. The funeral took place on Thursday morning from the Catholic church and all that was mortal was placed in the Catholic cemetery, a well won and honored rest.
