The cause of death, was paralysis. The body will be brought to Morris tomorrow morning on the 10 o'clock train and will be taken to the Catholic church were the services will be held. The G.A.R. Post will have charge of the funeral. Richard Hughes was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in June 1835. His parents immigrated to the United States in 1845, settling in Portsmouth, Va., where Richard received his education. About 1855 he came to Morris and engaged in farming until the breaking out of the Civil war. He then enlisted in July, 1862, in Company C, 76th Illinois infantry. He was promoted to first lieutenant in 1864 and was mustered out as captain in 1865, at Blakely, Ala. He was in twenty-seven engagements, including the siege of Vicksburg. He also had six brothers in the war, one being killed in the Battle of Shiloh, and three of them, including himself, were wounded at Blakely. After the war he engaged in business in Morris and lived here until a few years ago when he went to reside with his son, John, in Chicago. Three brothers, Mike, Anthony and Martin, reside in Vienna township, and Pat resides in Morris. Five sons, John, William, Richard, Thomas and Dennis, also survive.
