He had been ailing for over a year, and although the best of medical skill was employed, the disease was not arrested, but continued to prey upon his system until it resulted in his death at the age of 63 years, 7 months and 13 days. Gershom Hunt was born in New Lebanon, N. Y., January 18, 1828, his parents being William F. and Betsey Tabor Hunt. In February, 1856, being in the prime of a vigorous manhood, he came West, doing directly to Iowa where he spent but a few months, when he returned to Illinois, locating in this county. In the spring of 1863, he moved onto the farm in Saratoga where he continued to reside until his death. He enjoyed farm life, but finding that his health was giving way, some months ago he sold his farm, bought a house and lot in Morris, and had intended in the near future to move his family to this place where he hoped to spend the few remaining years of his life, free from the care and toil of the farm. Disease, however, tightened its grip upon him and, by removing him from his earthly home, brought to naught all of his plans. He was conscious up to within twenty-four hours of his death. Some time ago, he made full arrangements for the disposition of his property, expressing by will his wishes in regard to it. Mr. Hunt leaves a wife, four brothers and three sisters, besides many other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. Three brothers and two sisters, with many neighbors, were with him during his last moments, not only to do what they could for him, but to comfort, as far as they could, his beloved and sorrowing wife. In character Mr. Hunt was one of the most thoroughly honest and reliable men that ever lived in Grundy county. He was peculiar in some respects, but nothing in the world could induce him to do a thing which to him seemed wrong. He was the very embodiment of honesty, and that honesty was made manifest in every act of his life. Those who knew him best loved and respected him the most, as they came to know the man as he actually was. Death has taken him from earth, but a wide circle of relatives and friends will mourn his departure, remembering always the many noble virtues which adorned his character. The funeral was held at the family home on Tuesday, September 1, at 1 o'clock, p. m., Rev. Bucks officiating. Interment at the Walley cemetery.
