He had been in poor health for the past two years or more. The funeral took place from the family residence on Monday afternoon. Rev. W. C. Magner, officiating. Mr. Steel was born in Stockton, Eng., March 16, 1812. In 1848 he came to America, landing at New Orleans, where he remained but a short time, before moving with his family to St. Louis, Mo., where he resided for some years and in 1851 moved to Chicago and in 1854 came to Morris, where he has since resided. The greater portion of the time of his residence here he has been engaged in coal mining, being among the first to engage in mining operations in this city. At different times he was engaged somewhat in the manufacture of brick, and in later years has given attention to gardening. He was honest, and generous to a fault. Deceased had married three times. His first wife died prior to his coming to America; the second some five years ago. He leaves a widow and two children, Mrs. Wm. Ferguson and John Steel, Jr., both residents of this city.
