GRUNDY COUNTY PIONEER DIES, AGED 87 YEARS

Thomas A. Walsh, Resident of Vienna Over 50 Years

Thomas A. Walsh one of the early settlers of Grundy county, died this morning 
in his home in Vienna township after a long illness of years standing from 
asthma.

Mr. Walsh was nearing the ninetieth year of his life and for more than half a 
century lived in Vienna township. He was born in Lower Canada, November 12, 
1835, a son of Robert T. and Elizabeth (McKeown) Walsh. His parents, natives 
of Ireland, were married there and shortly after emigrated to Canada.

Deceased received the ordinary education and engaged in farming with his 
parents until he was 23. He went at that age to Kendall county to work as a 
farm hand and in 1860 moved to Mazon and engaged in farming with his cousin, 
John Hamilton. Two years later he purchased 320 acres in Vienna with a partner 
and a year later bought his interest and added 60 acres more to it. He became 
an extensive stock raiser and became prominent in agricultural pursuits. In 
1882 he was compelled to retire because of asthma and his sons carried on the 
pursuits of their father. He was noted for his integrity and fair dealing and 
generosity.

Leaves Six Children

Mr. Walsh was married March 30, 1868, to Miss Priscilla Ward, who passed away 
a few years ago. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Walsh surviving are Mrs. 
Fred Dix, of Vienna; William and Hugh, who live in Alberta, Can.; Mrs. George 
Beal, of Verona; Mrs. Frank Ransley, of Verona; Edmund, residing at home. 
Deceased also leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Clark in Madrid, N.Y., and a brother, 
Hugh Walsh in Montreal, Can.
