Wheeler, passed away at his home opposite the Baptist church this morning at 8:40 o'clock after a severe sickness of ten days, which became critical the latter part of last week and grew worse until his death. The cause of his taking away was a tumor on the liver. The funeral will be in charge of Richard Petty and will be from the Baptist church of this city Friday morning next, at 10 o'clock, Rev. Fisk officiating. Music will be furnished by the Baptist choir. After the noon day meal the procession will proceed to the Wheeler Cemetery in Mazon township where interment will be made. Ihe following will act as pall bearers: I. H. McKeen, David Foreman, J. H. Rogers, M. R. Hale, A. Hollenbeck, G. A. Leach. In the death of Mr. Wheeler the county loses one of its oldest inhabitants-a veritable pioneer in this region—and a respected citizen who was present at the country's development from a primitive organization and watched and participated in its progress for nearly half a century. Authenticated tradition gives it that Mr. Wheeler settled in Mazon township in a log cabin which had the first board floor laid in a log structure in the county, and that the boards for it were hauled from Chicago by oxen. In this modest dwelling was born our respected supervisor from Mazon. The deceased was the son of Stephen and Maria (Powers) Wheeler. He was born in Duchess county, New York, on Jan 28, 1820. He removed to Grundy county, Ill., in May, 1850, locating in Mazon township on the farm which is now familiarly called, and has been for many years the old Wheeler homestead, occupied by Supervisor George E. Wheeler, the only living son of the decedent. Before coming to Illinois on Oct. 16, 1849, Mr. Wheeler was united in holy wedlock to Amanda R. Simmons. For twenty-three years they lived at the homestead they founded on 100 acres in Section 15 of Mazon township, which continued to be their property, their son, though residing on it since their removal to Morris, having in due course of time acquired other farm property in that vicinity. In the year 1873 Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler moved to this city, where they have ever since been continuous residents. As a result of their union three children were born, viz: George E. Wheeler, now residing in Mazon township; Elmer E., who died at the tender age of a year and a half in the year 1861, and Clara M., now Mrs. A. J. Neff, who has made her home with her parents, and with her aged mother and her husband, are now the only occupants of the home in this city. Of Stephen Wheeler’s family the following two brothers and sister are left to mourn for the deceased: Fred P. Wheeler, of New York, R. H. Wheeler, of Chicago, and Helen (Wheeler) Mercereau of New York. The only remaining relation in this vicinity, besides those already mentioned, is David Rose, of Mazon, first cousin of the deceased. Mr. Rose’s parents, Philip and Caroline Rose, located in this county a year or two earlier than the deceased. They have both passed on before to immortality. The deceased was not only well-known by the old settlers of Mazon and surrounding country, who respected him for his sterling worth and were gratified with him in his success in life, but found a newer circle of friends and acquaintances when he removed to Morris in retirement from active life to spend the remainder of his days in quietude and the well-earned enjoyment of rest from weary toil. While he attained the ripe old age of 77 years-his 77th birthday would have been reached tomorrow had he lived-there are many throughout the entire community who mourn with the bereaved over the departure of a beloved and revered parent and citizen.
