WASSON Shawneetown, Gallatin Co, ILLS _____________________________________ "Box #32133 Certificate #58103 MALINDA MARTIN Bundle # JJ (?- I think that's it) _____________________________________ "Sate of Illinois Gallatin County I, WILLIAM ANDERS being first duly sworn declare that I well knew JAMES MARTIN late Co B 56th ILLS Infantry in his lifetimw, and that I well knew MALINDA MARTIN his Mother having become acquainted with both upon their reaching ILL from Tennessee in the Spring of 1858- that siad MALINDA MARTIN is and has been since affiants acquaintance with her without property real or personal except a limited amount of household furniture not exceeding $30.00 in value and no means of support but her own labor and the assistance of her son the deceased soldier and since his death she has been dependent upon her neighbors- shehaving grown unable to do any manual labor and being almost blind- That said JAMES MARTIN before his (death?)worked by the day and month to support his Mother and family getting $.50 a day or $13.00 per month. That during years 1858, 1859, and 1860- he worked some 9 months for affiant at various times for which he paid at the rate of $13.00 per month- that from $8.00 to $9.00 per month of that amoount was paid his Mother and used by her to support herself and smallchildren and was necessary for their support. He further states that after his enlistment he (said soldier) sent and brought his Mother money for her support. Affiant naming a son in same Regiment visited the boiys near Corinth, Mississippi in June, 1862 and brought a package of money from said deceased soldier to his Mother and afterward when said deceased soldier came home on furlough he brought his said Mother money and presents, but affiant can not now recollect exact amount brought by him from Corinth and brought home by soldier himself. These facts he states from personal knowledge and without interest in this claim WILLIAM ANDERS Attest: JOHN R. MORELAND residing in said county and state do solemnly swear that I well knew JAMES MARTIN late a soldier of Co. B 56th ILLS VOLS Infantry in his lifetime and that I well knew MALINDA MARTIN his Mother having become acquainted with them in the Spring of 1858 upon their arrival from Tenn. That said MALINDA MARTIN is a widow and has been since affiant knew dependent upon her own labor and the assistance of said JAMES MARTIN for support.......... Affiant states that he employed said JAMES MARTIN to work for him at various times during the year 1859-1860, and 1861 paying him for his service $13.00 per month and that he4 knows that at least two-thirds of that was regularly apporopriated to the support of his Mother and family............ MORELAND" _____________________________________ "State of Illinois Gallatin County On this day 30th December AD 1871 before me county clerk in and for said county personally appeared KEZIA ANDERS of Gallatin County, ILLS who being duly sworn says she is 54 years of age, and that she well knew THOMAS MARTIN and Father of JAMES MARTIN who was a late private Co. B 56th ILLS VOLS Infantry before his marriage to the time of his death.- that she also well knows MALINDA MARTIN widow of said THOMAS MARTIN and Mother of said JAMES MARTIN and knew her also when she was a girl- that her maiden name was MALINDA LOVELL. That affiant personally knows that said THOMAS MARTIN and MALINDA LOVELLwere married in Sumner Co, Tennessee on the 7th day of August 1837. Affiant helped MALINDA dress for her marriage. B 56th ILLS VOLS and "Lost at sea on board US Steamer GEN'L LYON" burned off Cape Hatteras March 31, 1865 Marriage: Certified copy of Public Record Loyalty: Declared Agent and Post Office address: Z. B. WASSON, Shawneetown, Gallatin Co, ILLS REJECTED March 21, 1872 by WM. L. HARRIS (?) Incidental matter: Rejected on the ground that the claimant is not entitled to a pension under the law. SARAH MARTIN- widow of JAMES MARTIN- remarrid in 1867 Also..personally appeared to attest: NANCY ANDERS (Additional info from file:) THOMAS MARTIN died at Cave-In-Rock, ILL while removing with his family from Tennessee, leaving 3 children (not named)- but JAMES MARTIN was the eldest about 14 years old.
