Obituary of Samuel Flanigan RAY, Hamilton County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Misty Flannigan Obituary Samuel Flanigan Ray son of Doctor Thomas D. and Sarah Flanigan Ray, was born May 31st, A. D. 1870, and departed this life on the sixteenth day of January 1930. The father of the deceased, Doctor Ray, was during his lifetime, one of the leading physicians in Southern Illinois, and during the years of his professional career enjoyed a wide practice among his acquaintances in Hamilton and Franklin counties. He was a splendid physician, genial personality, and a loyable character. The mother of the deceased, whose maiden name was Sarah M. Flannigan, was a daughter of Captain Wallace Flannigan, a veteran of the Mexico and Civil Wars, and Sarah Cantrell Flannigan, and a mother coming from such splendid parentage would manifest those superior qualities of womanhood, so characteristic of the mother of the deceased. The deceased, like his noble father, was a man of genial disposition, kindness of heart, and of a lovable personality. Like his mother, he found pleasure in the things that were cultural. His fondness for music, for which his entire family was noted, is known to all his acquaintances, and the artist touch which he gave in his music, both vocal and instrumental, went straight to the hearts of his audience. In the year 1890, while a student at Ewing College, he united with and was baptized into the Missionary Baptist Church. On March 26th, A. D. 1892, he was united in marriage to Helen Foster, a daughter of Elder S. R. Foster, a Pioneer Baptist preacher of Hamilton county, Ill. This marriage united two of the oldest and most substantial families of the community, in which they resided. To this union five children have been born, two of whom died in infancy, and three of whom, namely, Mrs. Easel Weaver, Tom Ray, and James Ray, together with their mother, who was so faithful in her ministration during his last illness, survive the deceased. He leaves also five grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends who have been made happier by his living and who feel a deep loss at his passing away. He leaves two brothers, Robert Ray and Paul Ray, both of Chicago, and three sisters, Mrs. Ive Fogleman of Chicago and Mrs. Myrtle Greve of Chicago, and Mrs. Gertrudr Endord of Portland, Oregon. Our departed friend in health loved life and the pleasure that accompanied it, but he ever maintained a deep and abiding faith in God and the immortality of the soul. To his family, his friends and acquaintances he was kind, tender and patient, and the place that he filled in their hearts will be vacant, until they, too, shall have passed through the ever open gate into the silent city of the dead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations or persons.
