Sanderson Cemetery, aka Breneman, St Albans Twp, Hancock Co., IL Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives May 6, 2004 by Janet L Howard ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I obtained this when researching my husband's family - the Howards and Crabtrees. When I go back to visit my husband's family, I will try to get in to take pictures. This was compiled in 1971 and the information that follows more recent: The cemetery was called the Breneman Farm (Cemetery) at one time. Early burials in this place would seem to indicate it was founded at a very early date. Dates on stones such as 1850 for Samuel Caldwell, 1852 for the Harris boy. It must have been founded quite a number of years before the Breneman family acquired the farm. The 1859 county atlas does not show ownership by them. Nor does the well known 1874 Abdreas County atlas. The 1891 county atlas shows James Breneman a farm owner at this point as does also the 1904 and the 1908 ones. The farm is located in section 36 in the southeast corner of St Albans Twp. It and the cemetery are not more than half mile above the Adams county line. The cemetery is now completely abandoned with all monuments down and partly covered with trash, with brush grown up everywhere and in extremely poor condition. It's in the woods which apparently has been used for pasturing livestock in past years. To get to it you have to walk back a quarter of a mile at least from the farm which is on a north-south gravel road. Or one can take a side road and get a little closer to the cemetery, but one has to walk over fields after leaving the road here also. This side road is a dirt one like the ante bellum ones were all over Illinois (before the Civil War). According to the historical society, it is the only known cemetery around Stillwell, Il., but is wrong in one respect. I know there is another one close to Stillwell. My husband's family is buried there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Name--Birth--Death--Age--Related to--Comments BRENEMAN Aurelia C--no bd--2/14/1850--27d--d/o H & B Breneman--tombstone BRENEMAN Barbary--no bd--4/30/1854--46y10m23d--w/o H.Breneman --tombstone BRENEMAN Granville B--no bd--2/1/1863--2m8d--s/o H & A.M.
