In 1838 the family moved to McDonough County, Illinois, where they remained until 1846, then removed to Mercer County, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood. At the early age of eighteen years she professed her faith in the Master and united with the Pope River congregation of the Old School Presbyterian church, and remained during her long and useful life a faithful, earnest member. She taught several terms of district school in Mercer county. In 1851 she was united in marriage to E. E. Harris, who preceded her to the better land March 4, 1912. To this union were born seven children, all of whom died in infancy except two sons, Howard of Fountain Green, and William Wallace of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, who survive to mourn the loss of a tender, loving mother. In 1869 Mr. and Mrs. Harris removed with their children from Mercer County, to make their home in Fountain Green until September 30, 1913 the 60th anniversary of her marriage, when she passed quietly and peacefully to rest and to her great reward. She was the first of a group of five sisters to be taken. She lived a life of earnest thoughtfulness and good works, ever mindful of those about her, working for their eternal as well as temporal welfare. As a young woman she radiated a strong, helpful influence as she went in and out among her friends, and in later years those who came to her for counsel, sympathy or fellowship, felt that here indeed lived a woman of God, and one who loved her fellow-men. Her unassuming life of patient, loving service and unswerving faith will ever be, to those nearest and dearest, an inspiring and precious memory.
