Obituary of Dee Holbrook, Hardin County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Wanda Reed Name of Deceased: Dee Holbrook Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent Date of Newspaper: 1 May 1930 The subject of this sketch was born February 25, 1882; died March 21, 1930, after a painful illness of short duration with perhaps of complications of diseases as asthma being the greatest trouble. After funeral services, conducted by J. R. Palmer his remains were tenderly laid to rest in Peters Creek cemetery March 22 to await resurrection. He was first married to Grady Aaron March 21, 1910 who preceded him to the great beyond February 29, 1920; to this union was born one son, W. D. Holbrook. Later, he was married to Rachel Jackson, December 8, 1920, in whom the father found a constant and faithful companion, the tender little son a mother--all seemed to be perfectly happy until his death. Dee was a well respected citizen and one who was always fair and honest in dealings--one we dearly loved as a friend and neighbor and was greatly interested in his spiritual welfare. We visited him during his illness and found him very penitent. We feel that the good Lord was very gracious in affliction as affliction or calamities are often sent in mercy and good for the soul, they serve to bring us in touch and in favor with the Lord. He questioned some of his friends attending his bedside by saying, "Wouldn't it be better to be with our blessed Savior walking the Golden Streets than to be climbing these old hills?" He leaves an aged father, mother, wife, son, two brothers, two sisters and a host of friends to mourn his loss. There is a sickle whose name is death, which at an appointed time cuts down the young, the old, black or white, rich or poor it has no respect of persons--therefore, if we realize these things, it behooves everyone to prepare for that event; happy are ye if you are ready to welcome the reat monster with a smile feeling that you are exchanging the perilous, perishing things of this life for a peaceful sinless and a glorious abode with our loved ones who have gone before. Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the bereft.
