Obituary for Ella C. McKernan, Hardin County, Illinois On the morning of December 25th. the community was shocked to hear of the death of Mrs. Ella C. McKernan, which occured at her home near Wolrab Mills. Her death was very unexpected and occurred in a rather peculiar manner. For the past three years she and her son, Arthur, had been living on their farm near the old furnace and apparently were enjoying their country life very much, although they were city bred, and we must say highly cultured and sociable. As usual the son arose at about 5:30 o'clock Christmas morning and built a fire, and it being a holiday, with no rushing work on hand he decided to go back to bed and enjoy another nap. He remembers that while in bed about half asleep of seeing his mother pass by his bed and cast a look at him that proved later to be the final one. Not seeing anything wrong or even suspicious in the look he contented himself and it was 7:00 o'clock before he arose from the bed for the day. Becoming somewhat alarmed at the non appearance of his mother he at once began a search for her, looking first into one room and another until he finally found her lifeless body in the kitchen lying on the floor, her hands clutching a small lamp that was still burning. He carried the lifeless though yet warm body into the house and laid it on a cot near the fire and administered resuscitative treatment but to no avail for life was extinct. She had suffered the past two weeks with terrible pains in her head and at times say things that indicated a distorted mind, but so serious and sudden and ending was not expected. After a careful analysis of the symptons by Dr. Fowler said that no doubt her death was caused by paralysis of the heart. The remains were taken up on the Lowry Monday evening enroute to Indianopolis, Indiana a former home of the deeased for burial. Mrs. McKernon was a noble woman and has many friends here who grieve to learn of her death. She was a member to the Catholic Church, to which she was very devoted. May her ashes rest in peace.
