Obituary for Elizabeth "Deal" Gentry McDowell, Hardin County Illinois Elizabeth or Deal as she was familarly called, was the second daughter and fourth child of Alexander and Lutetia Gentry, was born in Hardin County, IL. March 18, 1857; married Wayne McDowell at her old homestead Dec. 27, 1875, nine children was the result of this union, namely, Mrs Nora Douglas, Walter, George Potter, who died January 15, 1892, Mrs Dora Perry, Nannie, who died 12 September `1897, Wayne, Kell, Mrs Ida Angleton and a boy baby died in infancy April 1893. She professed faith in Christ and joined the Presbyterian Church at Potter Memorial Church under the preaching of Rev. Robert Reed in 1889. She lived a pure clean life and to know her was to love her. She being a farmer's wife, was a hard-working woman, how she did work, not only in day time, but late in the night by lamp light knitting socks and stockings, making dresses for the girls, and clothes for the boys, cooking for the harvest and wheat threshing hands, sacrificing her own comfort for her children. Those who knew Deal when a young lady, remembers her as a most beautiful girl. She inherited to a high degree the admirable characteristics of the Gentry family, purity and character, sincerety and honesty of purpose and as God has willed that nothing good and innocent shall die and be forgotten, the deeds of this affectionate wife, devoted mother, obedient daughter, sincere Christian and obliging neighbor will live in the hearts of her loved ones and friends. Her husband passed away May 2, 1913. She was visiting her daughter, Nora and seemed to be in good health and without the least of warning on Sunday about 9:00 o'clock a.m. March 29, 1923, she passed away with that most dreaded and fatal disease, heart failure. Those who are left to mourn are 6 children, 20 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 1 brother John J. Gentry, 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Locke, Mrs. Sarah Smith and Mrs. Ida B. Clements. All that was mortal of dear Deal was tenderlay laid to rest amid flowers from loved ones in Beavers cemetery near Cave-in-Rock, IL. March 30 at 3:00 p.m. Rev. M.F. Oxford conducted the funeral service reading te 14th.
