Obituary for Fred McDowell, Hardin County, Illinois Fred McDowell, 67, died at his home in Cave-in-Rock early Tuesday morning. He had not been in good health for a long time, having a heart ailment. The illness which ended in death was brief. He became ill early Monday morning after having eaten his breakfast. A physician was called and at night he appeared to be feeling much better, but became worse at about 3:00 a.m. tuesday. He suffered a paralytic stroke from which he never regained consciousness. Death occurred soon after nine o'clock. Mr. McDowell was a son of the late George and Cynthia Ann (Burklow) McDowell and had been born near Cave-in-Rock. He was a veteran of WW I, having served through the entire war. Much of the time was spent in Belgium and France. After his return from over seas, he operated a mercantile business in Cave-in- Rock for a time. Later he employed himself in driving a taxi cab. He gave that business up years ago because of ill health. Survivors include his wife, Esther, four sons: Vernon McDowell, Joliet, IL; Master Sgt. L.C. McDowell, Granite City, IL.; James Orlan McDowell, Grand Island, Neb.; and Lt. Jerald E. McDowell, Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, daughter Lt. Nina E. McDowell, who is on her way to England, two grandchildren, three brothers, R.T. McDowell and Howard McDowell, Cave-in- Rock, and John McDowell, Caseyville, KY. and two sisters Mrs. Lessie Lampert, near Cave-in-Rock and Mrs. Minnie Cook, alton, IL. Funeral services, in charge of the Rose Funeral Home will be held this afternoon at the home in Cave-in-Rock and burial will be in the Cave-in-Rock Masonic cemetery.
