George Lowell Oxford was born in Hardin County on February 14, 1915 to Elmer and Dora Lee Patton Oxford. On October 10, 1935, he was united in marriage to Lydia Smith, his surviving wife of 53 years. To this union five children were born: Shirley, Otis, Linda, Connie and Joan. To continue the family tree, Lowell has 11 grandchildren: Terry, Carl, and Roger, sons of Shirley and Ted Wood, Georgia Ann Roach and L.A. and Michael, children of Otis and Janet Oxford Kevin, son of Linda and Dean Jerrells; Jonnie and Scott Osman sons of the late Larry Osman and Connie and J.D. Barnett; Robin and Jason children of Joan and Dennis Kaegi. For even greater joy, Lowell and Lydia have been blessed with 6 great-grand children; Bradley, Timmy and Katie, children of Terry and LeAnn Wood; April and Cole, children of Carl and Donna Wood; and Ryan, son of Roger and Terri Wood. Lowell has one surviving sister, Hester Lackey of Roxanna, Illinois. His beloved family gone before him: one half brother, Orval Patton; 3 brothers, Ted, Celby and Raymond and one sister, Ruby Anderson. Lowell and Lydia began their lives together in Shawneetown and spent most of their married life at Cave-in-Rock. On March 27, 1967, Lowell joined Mt. Zion Church, was a deacon and was an active member for over 21 years.
