Obituary of Arthur Lee IRBY, Hardin County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Wanda Reed Name of Deceased: Arthur Lee IRBY Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent Date of Newspaper: 11 March 1915 Arthur Lee Irby, the subject of this memorial sketch, son of James N. and Fanny Irby, was born near Rock Creek, Hardin County, Illinois, March 23rd. 1884, passed from this earthly scene by accident in Fairview Mines on the morning of February 14th. 1915 about 8:30 o'clock, age 30 years, 10 months and 22 days. Deceased moved to Rosiclare, Illinois in 1909 from the state of Kentucky where he had spent several years of his life, during which time he won many friends. On May 10, 1914 he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy Spivey of Rosiclare, his father Esq. James N. Irby officiating. Besides his young wife he leaves a father, mother, two sisters, Mrs. Laura Stacey of Rosiclare, Illinois and Mrs. Hester Ladwig of Beloit, Wisconsin, two half sisters Miss Mary Irby, Mrs. Effie Leivers, all of Rosiclare, Illinois and a host of friends to mourn his loss. The writer had known Lee from childhood and there was a daily beauty about his life that won the friendship of all who knew him. In temperament he was mild, concilatory and candid, yet remarkable for as compromising firmness. He believed that the man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellowman, who lets into the dark places of his life the sunshine of human sympathy and human happiness is following in the footsteps of his Master. He was a young man of excellent heart, fine moral character and sturdy constitution and the stranger even a beggar never failed to find food and shelter if he sought it at his hands and was at the home by the bedside of the sick and delighted in all kinds of neighborly offices. He bore adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. It is a pleasure to remember him as he lived, it is with regret to say, he has passed away. Funeral services and burial were delayed until Tuesday Feb. 16, 1915 in order that his sister, Mrs. Hester Ladwig and family might arrive from their far off home and be present and witness the last rites. However they failed to arrive in time for the funeral service, which were conducted from the home by Rev. Needham, but arrived a few hours later after which the body was conveyed a short distance to the Rosiclare IOOF Cemetery and just at sunset amid a large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends all that was mortal of our beloved friend was lowered to it last resting place. The writer begs to tender sincere sympathy to the wife, parents, sisters and other relatives of the deceased in their great bereavement.
