Obituary of J R PALMER, Hardin County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Wanda Reed Name of Deceased: J R PALMER Name of Newspaper: Hardin County Independent Date of Newspaper: 13 April 1939 J.R. Palmer was born in Hardin County, Ill., Oct. 8, 1871, died April 4, 1939. He was the son of Calvin and Sophia Palmer. He professed faith in Christ at the age of 14 joined the Baptist Church of Peters Creek of which he has been a faithful member. He came up through great adversities, met many obstacles and oppositions, yet he persevered and stood firm for the truth. He sympathized with the fallen and the unfortunate and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was interested in little children, never forgot to implore God's blessing upon them that they might have proper instructions. He never ceased to warn the wicked wherever he came in contact with them -- strove hard to bring about harmony and brotherly love in the church. God blessed his efforts which resulted in a good revival in which several souls were saved. He esteemed one Christian as good as another regardless of faith of denomination -- treated all ministers with due respect. Was a special friend to the poor and the needy. He was married to Jodie Foster in 1898. Their life together was a happy life in spite of ill health. He was industrious, labored hard to meet his obligations with his fellow man. He was ordained to the ministry in 1898, had been Pastor of home church at different times and was Pastor of it at the time of his death. He did Pastoral work at Elizabethtown at different times; did some evangelistic work at different parts of the county; never made any charge for the gospel. He leaves his wife, his brother Jno. Palmer, his half sister Josie McFalls, many nieces, nephews and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
