The bright and sunshiny evening of May 1, A.D. 1907 when all life seems to be gay, the news rang out upon the cool breezes in our area, proclaiming the death of one of our eldest citizens which occured while he was eating dinner, being brought about by that awful disease called heart disease. The deceased, Louis Hicks, was born in Hicks Branch in Hardin county, Illinois Dec 16 A.D. 1832. He was united in matrimony to Miss Margaret Patton Mar. 27 th., 1856 of which 5 children belssed their union, there being 4 boys and 1 girl, of which all passed away while in their infantile state excepting one, Mrs Sarah Ferrell, who still survives. Mrs. Hicks joined her 4 little ones in Paradise Oct. 15th. A.D. 1865. On Aug 5th. A.D. 1868, Uncle Louis was again united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Miss Mary Johnson, of which 10 children blessed their union, there being 8 boys and 2 girls as follows: Charley, Ben, Marion, Henry, Milo, Fannie, and Loy all of whom are now living excepting Marion who passed away Oct. 19th. 1894, being 19 years of age. Uncle Lewis professed faith in Christ about the year A.D. 1851. He was united with the General Baptaist church and lived a strict christian life until death took him away. He was 74 years 4 months and 15 days old. He was afflicted with blindness most of his life and confined to his home for about 5 years previous to his death, but bore his afflictions with patience unto the end of the race, always trusting in God for guidance of his spirit and eternal life in the blest world to come. He was held with the highest esteem by all his friends (who were many) and his character in general is beyond reproach. He leaves one brother, Milas Hicks, of Hicks, Illinois and two sisters Mrs James Carlisle and Mrs. Richard Binum of Rosiclare and a companion besides his children to mourn his departure, left the evidence behind that he was ready to go. So dear friends our loss is his eternal gain, and let us so live that when the summon comes we can answer and say that we are ready to go and then it will be that we will meet with all the redeemed of earth and rejoice around that eternal throne of God wlhere parting will be no more.
