Obituary for Martha Jane Lowry Of Mrs Martha Jane Lowry, born 22 June 1861-died 4 Aug 1924 age 63 years 1 month and 23 days. There is nothing more beautiful in the world than the life of a devoted, Christian mother. There is nothing which does more for its country or its God. A mother speaks to posterity through her children; and her every day life, no matter how simple, shapes her home, and determines its standing in her community. Such a life reached its close on Aug 14th. at the death of Martha Jane Lowry. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hodge, having been born June 22nd. 1861. At the age of 18 she professed faith in Christ and became a member of the Christian Church, though a few years later she joined the General Baptist church at Mount Zion. When asked her reason for changing her church affiliations, she replied, "The church makes no difference, so long as the heart is right, and I am hoping this move will bring my husband into the church. She was right, it did; and her husband has since became one of the county's favorite ministers. In 1879 Martha Jane Hodge was married to J. M. Lowry, to which union was born 6 children, 3 of whom survive her; Mrs Ed Pennell, E. St. Louis, Mrs Henry Barnard, of Gallatin Co. IL. and Gordon who lives with his father. Mrs. Lowry had not been well for several years; but so long as she was physically able, she cared for her home, and did her share of the work in her church. She was an affectionate mother, a devoted wife, a zealous Christian, and a good neighbor. She delighted in rendering assistance to her neighbors, and in ministering to them when they were ill. The esteem in which she was held was easily descernable in the large number of sorrowing friends which attended the funeral. For some time previous to her death she had been under the Dr's care; and also she had suffered intensely, it was not known by her family that her condition was so precarious. Her husband, son Gordon and niece were with her at the time of her death; and they tell us that she passed just like a tired child going to sleep, whispering: "Beautiful!, Beautiful!" Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Willie Dutton the following day, and interment made at the Shoemaker cemetery.
