Obituary for Mary Stokes Patton Hardin County, Illinois MARY STOKES PATTON It was with pitiful regret that we learned of the death of Mary, wife of Elias Patton, which occured at her home on Rock Creek week before last. She had typhoid fever, aggravated by other troubles, some of which were peculiar to her sex, and hence her case was considered almost hopeless from the start. She was considered by many as a strong, healthy woman, but she was far from it. She had been in very delicate health most of the time for several years. Deceased was born 27 May 1852 and died 8 Sep. 1898 having passed by a few months her 45th milestone. She was born in Union Co. this state, and lived there until she was almost 18 years old when her mother married Rev. James R. Oxford, who brought the family to this county. She was united in marriage to Elias Patton 4 Sep. 1873 and to them 9 children were born 7 boys and 2 girls, 6 of whom survive her.Two boys and one girl having died in infancy. She possessed in high degree many of the characteristics of a good wife- -such as industry, frugality and the proper management of her household affairs. She was a loving and dutiful mother and wife, and did her duty in all respects as she saw it, and verily believed. She was an exceedingly good nurse and was devoted in her attentions to the sick in her vicinity. This writer remembers with feelings of gratitude a kindness shown him by deceased a short time ago, when he fell suddenly sick at her house with cramp colic. He suffered intensly for an hour or more, and the efforts she made to relieve him, and which did relieve him were worthy of a Sister of Charity. As the obituary proper of deceased it to be written by another, we will desist.
